Articles – A, An, The को Articles कहा जाता है। इनका प्रयोग सिर्फ singular noun के पहले होता है। यानी इनका प्रयोग adjective की भाँति होता है। इन्हे Modern English Grammar में Determiners भी कहा जाता है

Kinds of Articles

1. Indefinite Articles – A’ और ‘An’ Indefinite Articles कहलाते है, इनका प्रयोग किसी Noun के positions को indefinite या uncertain (अनिश्चित) बनाने के लिए किया जाता है। जैसे –
   1. She gave her a note book.
   1. He saw an old lady.
   1. A dog was barking at night.
   1. The sun rise in the East.
   1. The Rajputs are brave people.
   1. The gold of Nepal is cheap.
   • A / An का शाब्दिक अर्थ एक, सब, प्रति, प्रत्येक, के हिसाब, से, कोई, पर होता है परंतु The का कोई शाब्दिक अर्थ नहीं होता है। इसका functional अर्थ होता है।
   • A / An Adjective ‘one’ का कमजोर रूप (weak form) है, जबकि ‘The’ Adjective – This, that का कमजोर रूप (weak form) है।
   • Consonant starting Noun से पहले यदि The का प्रयोग हो तो उसे दॅ पढ़ा जाता है, जबकि Vowel starting Noun के पहले The का प्रयोग हो तो इसे दी पढ़ा जाता है। लेकिन noun पर जोर डालने के लिए The को दी पढ़ा जाता है, चाहे Noun consonant या Vowel से Start क्यों ना हो।
   • जब हम English में बात करते है या कोई speech देते है तो सामान्यतः A का उच्चारण अ तथा An का उच्चरण अन करते है, लेकिन A तथा An का उच्चारण स्वतंत्र रूप से करना हो या speech मे a / an के बाद आने वाले शब्द पर विशेष जोर देना हो तो A का ए तथा An का ऐन उच्चारण किया जाता है।

   Use of Articles

   किसी भी शब्द के पहले A / An का प्रयोग करने से पहले यह जानना आवश्यक है की उस word का पहला letter कौन-सा है, तथा पहले letter का first sound क्या है। इसको जाने बिना A / An के प्रयोग करने आपसे गलती करने की संभावना बढ़ जाती है, तो इस गलती से बचने के लिए सबसे पहले आपको English letters और उसके Sound को समझना अति आवश्यक है

   Use of ‘A’

   1. A का प्रयोग singular common noun के पहले पूरी जाति का बोध करने के लिए होता है जैसे-
      • A cow is a useful animal.
      • A bird has two wings.
   2. यदि adjective का प्रयोग singular common noun के पहले हुआ हो तथा exclamatory sentence में adjective singular common noun से पहले आया हो तो उससे पहले ‘A’ का प्रयोग किया जाता है। जैसे –
      • What a fine day it was.
      • All is a good student.
   3. How / rather / however और quite के singular common noun के पहले ‘A’ का प्रयोग करते है। जैसे –
      • Quite dull a boy.
      • However old a book it must be read.
   4. A का प्रयोग हम one/on/each/per etc. के अर्थों के लिए भी करते है। जैसे –
      • David has a dog.
      • She went a hunting.
      • Rise is sold 8 rupees a kilo.
   5. Consonant से शुरू होने वाले अधिकतर common noun के पहले ‘A’ का प्रयोग होता है। जैसे –
      • A dog
      • A cat
      • A plane
      • A car
      • A bus etc.
   6. ‘U’ अथवा ‘Eu’ से शुरू होने शब्द जिनका उच्चारण ‘यू’ होता है, के पहले A article का परोग करते है। जैसे –
      • A union
      • A unique player
      • A university
      • A European
   7. ‘O’ से start होने वाले शब्द जिनका उच्चारण यदि ‘व’ हो तो उसके पहले A article का प्रयोग किया जाता है। जैसे –
      • A one side decision
      • A one act play
      • A one eyed man
   8. अगर verb का प्रयोग noun की तरह हो तो verb के पहले indefinite article का परोग होता है। जैसे –
      • Priya went for a walk.
      • Manish need a help.
   9. अगर post से किसी व्यक्ति के profession का बोध होता हो तो इसके पहले indefinite article का प्रयोग किया जाता है। जैसे –
      • Rohan is a bank manager.
      • Gopal is a typist.
   10. किसी समूह या अनिशीचीत संख्या को बताने वाले कुछ शब्दों से पहले A article का प्रयोग होता है। जैसे-
       • A lot of
       • A number of
       • A great deal of
       • A branch of
       • A group of etc.

   Use of ‘An’

   1. Vowel से start होने वाले nouns के पहले ‘An’ का प्रयोग होता है। जैसे –
      1. An apple
      1. An actor
      1. An elephant
      1. An hair
      1. An honest man
      1. An honourable leader
      1. An H.M.T. watch
      1. An LIC officer
      1. An S.D.O.
      1. An X-mas day etc.

      The Omission of A and An

      1. Plural Noun के पहले A अथवा An article का प्रयोग नहीं किया जाता है। जैसे –
         1. Incorrect – A great man / An apples
         1. Correct – Great man / Apples
         1. Incorrect – She is an intelligent.
         1. Correct – She is intelligent.
         • She is intelligent girl. – (Incorrect)
         • She is an intelligent girl. – (Correct)

         3. What kind of, what sort of और what type of के बाद article का प्रयोग नहीं होता है। जैसे –

         • What kind of a man is he? – (Incorrect)
         • What kind of man is he? – (Correct)
         • Music
         • Traffic
         • Poetry
         • Furniture
         • Advice
         • Scenery
         • Luggage etc.

         5. विशेष स्थिति को छोड़कर सामान्य रूप से किसी देश, व्यक्ति, food items, material noun etc. के पहले A / AN का प्रयोग नहीं होता है। जैसे –

         • The book was in a good condition. – (Incorrect)
         • The book was in good condition. – (Correct)
         • The book was in a good state. – (Correct)

         Use of ‘The’

         1. ‘The’ article का प्रयोग river, gulf, bay, group of mountains, sea, religious book, islands group आदि नामों के पहले होता है जैसे –
            • The Arabian Gulf
            • The Bay of Bengal
            • The Indian Ocean
            • The Bible
         2. कुछ देशों के नाम के पहले The का प्रयोग किया जाता है। जैसे –
            • The Sudan,
            • The Yemen
            • The City
            • The Hague
         3. Stars, Ships, Deserts, Plane, Plains आदि के नामों से पहले The का प्रयोग किया जाता है। जैसे –
            • The Sun
            • The Earth
            • The Sahara
            • The Queen Victoria आदि
         4. Superlative degree के adjective के पहले The का प्रयोग किया जाता है। जैसे –
            1. Shila is one of the most beautiful girls of her class.
            • The times of India
            • The UNO
            • The USA
            • The first
            • The second
            • The Hindu
            • The Muslims Etc.
            • The French
            • The English
            • The poor
            • The Chinese Etc
            • The Principal
            • The Prime Minister
            • The Piano
            • Kalidas is the Shakespeare of India.
            • The Mohan (इसका अर्थ है mohan उसकी पत्नी एवं बच्चे)
            • The Misses Sharma (The two Sharma sisters)

            The Omission of The

            1. खाद्य पदार्थ, खेलों के नाम के पहले The का प्रयोग नहीं होता है। जैसे –
               • The bread
               • The lunch
               • The cricket
               • The football
            2. कुछ Word के पहले हम The article का प्रयोग नहीं करते है। जैसे –
               • The God is almighty. – (incorrect)
               • God is almighty. – (correct)
            3. Parts of body, Language, Color, Flowers आदि के पहले The articles का प्रयोग नहीं करते है। जैसे –
               • The Latin
               • The black
               • The red
               • The neck
            4. महीनों के नाम, दिनों के नाम, Parts of days के पहले The article का प्रयोग नहीं होता है। जैसे –
               • The morning
               • The Sunday
               • The July
            5. The rank of, The post of, The position of के बाद प्रयुक्त होने वाले subject के पहले The का प्रयोग नहीं किया जाता है। जैसे –
               • He was promoted to the rank of the clerk. (incorrect)
               • He was promoted to the rank of clerk. – (correct)
